Overview - IYT Yachtmaster Coastal (Power or Sail)

There is now substitute for experience in most areas of life and yachting is no exception. The IYT Coastal Yachtmaster certification is an internationally recognized recreational level of experience, knowledge and expertise which demonstrates competency of the person to take charge of the safety of a vessel and it's passengers and crew. This comprehensive 6 day live aboard course (5 days for power) includes a practical on board exam, at the end of which it allows the Yachtmaster to take control of vessels up to 24m 60nm from shore in mild to moderate weather conditions. (note: This is not a commercial certificate and cannot be upgraded to commercial certification)

What are the prerequisites for taking the Yachtmaster Coastal Course?

  • 30 days and 800 miles at sea including 2 days as watch leader/skipper
  • 12 hours underway on watch at night
  • Minimum sea time must have been met prior to the final examination

Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate Limitations

  • Command of a vessel up to a maximum length of 78 ft /24 metres
  • In coastal waters up to 60 miles offshore
  • In moderate wind and sea conditions
  • Not for commercial use
